The metaphor rate is the quiet use of metaphor in language, in sentences.
The existence of metaphor is itself meant to help understanding by analogizing unfamiliar, abstract concepts to more familiar ones. But an LLM’s high-density, inappropriate use of metaphor can very well express abstract concepts as… even more abstract.
Mathematically speaking, the more essential impact of metaphor is this: as a “language function” mapping word x to word y (y=f(x)), it necessarily brings information loss, because the information content of y is always less than or equal to that of x.
So a higher metaphor rate means the report is harder to read.
Even for just this one metric of information volume, there are still quite a few unfinished topics, e.g. how to prevent a model from raising its information volume while also raising the amount of filler.
How to quantify a subjective feeling through a concise, elegant entry point is the part that most needs care; the validity of a metric also needs long-term production data tracking to verify, ultimately filtering out the Signals that can withstand the test and can genuinely guide product iteration.

Text-only IM:
When we discuss text-only IM, who the sender is and so on can all be mapped onto the image itself; it’s essentially an image recognition problem. As long as you convert the image recognition problem into the corresponding IM chat structure, and then through an IM structure, a planning structure, let the corresponding backend model handle that structure well, that’s enough.
I think this approach is already pretty good — I even think the business may need to design such a framework on purpose, or a front end.
But actually, if it’s multimodal, there will be some problems. For example, it infers from visual cues like color or position, and inference leaves room for error.
But if what you get is structured text data, like WeChat or WhatsApp chat data, or chat info pulled via API, then the Sender ID or Content fields each message carries don’t need to be recognized, because these are given facts to begin with — there’s no possibility of the model getting it wrong.
In this case, an ordinary model seems to do better. Not because the model is specialized and good at it, but because the task becomes simpler in this scenario. Its attention is relatively focused on one aspect, and that itself is a dimensionality reduction of the task difficulty.

In terms of age, Horyu-ji is older; Todai-ji is bigger, but it was rebuilt in the Edo period.

Its five-story pagoda is about 32.5 meters tall measured from the foundation; the central pillar is carved from cypress, and its felling date can be traced back to 594, more than 400 years earlier than the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. It belongs to the Asuka period (592–710) building complex, and in 1993 it was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site as “Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji Area”.
Todai-ji’s buildings came later than Horyu-ji’s, but the current buildings were successively destroyed in 1181 in Taira no Shigehira’s Nanto Yakiuchi and in 1567 in the fires of war caused by Matsunaga Hisahide and others, and were rebuilt in the Kamakura period (1190) and the Edo period (1709) respectively.
What you see now is actually the 1709 reconstruction; Horyu-ji is the original, unadulterated aesthetic.
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda relies on “five visible, four hidden” — five stories on the outside, with four hidden stories actually tucked inside. The hidden stories aren’t for viewing; they’re structural reinforcement layers. The whole pagoda has no nails and no rivets, supported purely by the interlocking of dougong brackets and mortise-and-tenon joints, holding up a pagoda body of about 7,400 tons total weight. It’s called a “museum of dougong brackets”.
Horyu-ji’s five-story pagoda uses another logic: the central pillar of the pagoda and the rest of the structure are not rigidly connected as one; the mortise-and-tenon joints retain a certain elasticity, and this flexible design helps absorb shaking in Japan’s frequent earthquakes. Japanese scholars also point out that although the building technique used for the five-story pagoda came in with Buddhism from the Korean peninsula in the 6th century, the technique actually used to stabilize the roughly 1,200-ton structure is something developed by Japan alone, which neither the Korean peninsula nor the Chinese mainland had. This is well worth comparing with the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda’s “half-inserted flying beams as the base, cleverly borrowing the rock for hidden support” — both are solving the problem of “an unstable center of gravity, how to resist earthquakes”, but the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda bites its beam ends into the rock mass to self-lock, while Horyu-ji relies on flexible mortise-and-tenon joints to “overcome hardness with softness”.
Todai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall is enormous; its challenge isn’t seismic flexibility but how to use a timber structure to prop up an extremely large-span space (57 meters wide, 50 meters deep). During the major repairs in the Meiji era they even brought in the most advanced steel truss technology of the time to reinforce it, which is already a product of combining traditional timber construction with modern engineering techniques.

This is the most core point of Chinese timber construction, and today you saw it with your own eyes at the Hanging Temple and the Wooden Pagoda: the Hanging Temple’s truly load-bearing cross beams are embedded in the rock and covered up by the wooden columns, while the dozen-odd wooden columns that look like they support the whole temple are actually “suspended but not bearing load”; the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda’s “five visible, four hidden” — from the outside you simply can’t tell there are four hidden stories, which are purely structural reinforcement layers, existing not for viewing.
Wooden architecture isn’t as durable in material terms as stone architecture: stone doesn’t rot, doesn’t fear insects, doesn’t fear fire — the Longmen Grottoes, Angkor Wat and the Yungang Grottoes all give a very good answer.
Compared with stone, which is strong in itself, wood is fragile; but fragile wood bursts out with intelligence and aesthetics — a tenacious aesthetics.
When a wooden structure breaks, you can repair the corresponding part locally, without knocking it all down and starting over.
The mortise-and-tenon joints of a wooden structure have elasticity in themselves, able to absorb earthquake energy through tiny deformation; stone buildings are more rigid and in a strong quake are instead prone to brittle cracking or even total collapse.
And more importantly, behind wooden structures is a worldview that doesn’t cling to material permanence — closer to a living tradition than a dead ruin.
Buildings age, get partially replaced, even get rebuilt (like Todai-ji), but the rituals, beliefs and craft they carry are passed down generation after generation.

The Wooden Pagoda was the most important goal of this trip; I have an inborn, physiological liking for wooden architecture that is alive. Compare it with Horyu-ji, the world’s oldest surviving wooden building, which I’d visited before, and Todai-ji, one of the world’s largest wooden buildings: the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the world’s tallest and oldest surviving pure-timber pavilion-style building.
Horyu-ji’s five-story pagoda and the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda have never been rebuilt in their history.
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda’s structure is unbelievably complex: the whole pagoda weighs over 7,000 tons, has more than 20,000 components, joined by over 80,000 mortise-and-tenon joints.
Stone’s fight against time is simple, brutal and effective — Angkor Wat, the Longmen Grottoes, the Yungang Grottoes. Wooden structures are fragile; they rely on a system of their own, on later maintenance, to fight earthquakes. When a wooden component breaks you can replace a single beam or column; the mortise-and-tenon joints of a wooden structure have elasticity in themselves, able to absorb earthquake energy through tiny deformation. And of course the most important thing is a thousand years of later generations guarding and maintaining it!!!
