Growing Bigger, Getting Less Useful
We’ve reached layer three. Information has been captured and denoised; records have been written down and polished into semi-finished products — now the question is: how do you turn these semi-finished products into actual knowledge?
Let’s start with a definition. Knowledge is structured, repeatedly reusable material relevant to you: a mental model, a handful of skills, a methodology, along with your judgment, positioning, and values. Its keyword is reusability, and it solves your own problems.
But most people’s “knowledge base” isn’t a knowledge base at all. It’s a bookmark folder.
Someone in the community described this misconception with real clarity: the biggest mistake about a knowledge base in the past was treating it like a bookmark folder — anything that seemed valuable got bookmarked, downloaded, saved, dumped in — and the result was a knowledge base that kept growing while what could actually be called on kept shrinking. They later realized the real problem wasn’t too little knowledge, but too much unprocessed information; and at a deeper level, the root cause was that the production of knowledge and the sedimentation of knowledge had been mixed together. With no boundary between the production zone, the experimentation zone, and the sediment zone, the whole system just got messier and messier.
So the core of this layer is a repositioning: transforming the knowledge base from “a warehouse where everything gets dumped in” into “a sediment zone for capability only.”
A Knowledge Base Only Has Two Jobs
The transformation starts by narrowing its responsibilities. A healthy knowledge base does exactly two things:
First, it sediments output that’s already been validated. A knowledge base is not the production site. Real thinking, discussions with various AIs, working out the rules, hunting for gaps, testing repeatedly — all of this should happen outside the knowledge base. Only content that’s been validated and can be reliably reused is good enough to come in and settle as a formal knowledge asset.
Second, it keeps knowledge that’s actually been used. Not everything you learn is worth keeping. Only what you’ve genuinely practiced, understood, and can reuse deserves to enter. This way, the knowledge base stops being a document warehouse and becomes your capability sediment zone.
Behind these two responsibilities is a zoning awareness you must establish:
- The production zone / experimentation zone: mess is allowed here. Inspiration, drafts, long conversations with AI, all sorts of unformed attempts pile up here. This actually corresponds to the previous layer — records.
- The sediment zone (the knowledge base): cleanliness is mandatory here. Only what’s been validated and distilled out of the production zone may enter.
Many people’s knowledge systems get more and more clogged precisely because they merge these two zones — dumping everything from the production site straight into the sediment zone, unfiltered. The knowledge base’s cleanliness isn’t obsessive-compulsive behavior — it’s the precondition for it to actually function.
Building the Skeleton with PARA and Knowledge Cards
Once the positioning is right, we can talk about structure. There are two proven anchors here: PARA and knowledge cards.
PARA is a simple top-level classification: Projects (ongoing), Areas (long-term responsibilities), Resources (topic materials), Archives (archived). Its advantage is that it’s action-centered rather than topic-centered — where a piece of knowledge lives depends on which project or area it serves, not “which discipline it belongs to.” This naturally ties knowledge to “use.” Someone in the community had Claude deploy a PARA structure into their Obsidian, and had the skeleton set up in minutes — a very typical AI-era move: you decide the structure, and hand the building to AI.
Knowledge cards are the atomic unit within the sediment zone. One card covers exactly one reusable point, restated in your own words, with the context in which it applies attached. There’s an expectation you need to set here: the value of a single card is limited, sometimes even seemingly negligible. Its power only shows up once volume grows and cards start forming connections with each other — like neurons, meaningless alone, producing intelligence only once networked. People in the community keep emphasizing this: don’t expect a qualitative leap from your first few dozen cards. It’s a compounding game, and early on you have to tolerate the feeling of “nothing seems to be happening.”
PARA manages the order of storage; knowledge cards manage the granularity of knowledge. Together, they make your sediment zone something you can both find your way around and actually put to work.
The Most Critical Leap in the AI Era: Your Folder Structure Is a Map for AI
Everything above already exists in plenty of classic note-taking methodologies. What genuinely makes the “knowledge layer” different in the AI era is the leap below — your knowledge base is no longer just for you to look at. It’s simultaneously something AI uses.
A retrospective from someone in the community, I think, touches the very core of this. They went to an in-person event expecting to learn “how to tune an AI system to be more powerful,” but the first thing the presenter did wasn’t write code — it was plan structure, asking them: how should your files ultimately be stored? In what form is your knowledge kept? — because the way you store things exists so AI can work based on that structure.
They went home and spent an entire week restructuring their folders, then summed it up in a few sentences I think are genuinely important:
- The folder structure you give AI is, in essence, a map. A messy map produces messy movement from the AI.
- What format each file is saved in, how each piece of knowledge is categorized, how each process is chained together — these aren’t obsessive tidying habits, they are constraints.
- AI has no intuition. It only has rules. Tell it the rule, and it follows the rule; when it drifts, repeat the correction, and it will remember.
- So they split an overstuffed
CLAUDE.mdandAGENTS.mdinto multiple dedicated folders, each responsible for exactly one thing — the folder structure itself became a kind of instruction. Fewer files, and the AI became more obedient, not less.
This, essentially, is context engineering applied to personal knowledge management. I wrote in Context Is Not Prompt that the center of gravity in context engineering is deciding, at every inference step, what gets loaded into the context window, in what order, and what gets evicted. Your knowledge base’s structure is exactly that base map determining “what AI can load in each time.” Structure tells AI who you are, what you care about, and how it should work for you.
So in the AI era, organizing your knowledge base is no longer a small private matter of “making myself feel comfortable looking at it.” It becomes something with real leverage: every bit you structure your knowledge base, your AI understands you one bit more, and what it produces for you gets one bit closer to actually being usable, actually being you. The knowledge base is the shared worldline between you and your AI.
This also warns, from the opposite direction, against a trap: if you outsource the entire knowledge layer to AI — let it collect for you, judge for you, structure for you — what you hand over isn’t just organizing work, it’s the opportunity for “AI to actually understand you.” A line from the community puts it well: present yourself manually first, then use AI to discover the boundaries of your own thinking. You have to build the skeleton yourself first, give it a baseline first, before AI knows which direction to grow toward.
Give Knowledge a Retirement Mechanism
The last piece, and the one most people miss: a knowledge base needs to be able to forget.
A knowledge base that only takes in and never lets go is destined to degrade back into a bookmark folder. So you need to install a retirement valve. A line from the community’s founder that a lot of people copied down as a rule: “If a piece of knowledge goes unused after being stored, it should be deleted.”
Behind this rule is a complete feedback loop. Someone in the community had AI review their own learning pipeline, and it immediately pointed out a gap: you’re only “learning it, storing it,” and calling on it via AI when needed — but there’s no feedback loop for whether a card is alive or dead after it’s been used. So they added that piece — set a cycle (they chose 60 days, since their cards were still few and still in the accumulation phase), and had an automated tool run every last week of the month, moving cards that hadn’t been called on in a long time into an archive.
That closed their entire loop: input → digest → save as a card → get called on → judge whether it’s worth keeping. The knowledge base stays “alive” this way — what remains inside is genuinely knowledge still working for you.
I really like this design, because it’s consistent with every stage before it: the information layer stays clean through “noise reduction,” the knowledge layer stays sharp through “retirement.” A good knowledge system isn’t one that keeps accumulating more — it’s one with metabolism: validated semi-finished products keep getting promoted in, dormant cards keep getting shown out.
While we’re at it, if you want to go a step further, you can add a “quality gate” to admission: newly sedimented knowledge, or a plan AI gives you, goes through a round of review first (someone in the community calls this their “advisory panel” — having another group of AIs, or yourself, play the role of a reviewer hunting for flaws) before it’s let through. This step will force you to slow down, and it often surfaces perspectives you hadn’t considered at all. Slowing down isn’t for the sake of delay — it’s to make sure the direction is right before you keep going.
Summary: From “I Know” to “I Can Call On It”
Let’s wrap up this layer. What the knowledge layer does is take these semi-finished records and, through “validate — distill — structure — retire on schedule,” turn them into repeatedly callable capability sediment. Its test comes down to one word: use. Will it get called on once it’s stored? Is it alive or dead after being called on? — everything revolves around “runnability.”
And in the AI era, the value of this layer doubles: the knowledge you’ve structured is simultaneously the context you’re feeding to AI. The more clearly you sediment yourself, the more AI can work on your behalf. The knowledge base is no longer just your second brain — it’s the first site shared between you and AI.
But no matter how thick your knowledge grows, it still solves your own problems. To make it produce value for others — to have it received, understood, connected with — it needs to go through one final stage: recombining knowledge for an audience into creation.
